Bone Marrow aspiration needle
A bone marrow aspiration needle is a specialized medical tool used to extract a sample of liquid bone marrow—typically from the hip bone (iliac crest)—for diagnostic purposes. It’s commonly used in the evaluation of blood disorders, cancers (like leukemia or lymphoma), or unexplained anemia.
🛠️ Key Components of a Bone Marrow Aspiration Needle:
Stainless Steel Cannula (Needle Shaft):
Hollow tube that penetrates the bone to access the marrow.
Comes in different sizes (usually 11G to 16G) depending on the patient and site.
Stilette or Trocar:
A sharp, solid inner needle used to pierce through the bone.
It’s removed once the cannula is in place.
Hub or Handle:
Attached to the top of the needle, allowing for grip and control.
May be ergonomically designed for easier handling.
Depth Guard or Stopper:
Prevents over-insertion.
Can be adjustable to match patient anatomy.
Luer Lock Connector:
Allows attachment of a syringe for aspiration of the marrow.
